Betsy Gunnels' Bio
Betsy and Fred Gunnels have been married for 38 years. They have 5 daughters and 7 grandchildren. Betsy and Fred both grew up in Arlington, Virginia. Fred graduated from W-L High School and Betsy from Yorktown High. They were High School sweethearts. Both were educated at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia.
Betsy's parents, Scotty and Dotty Buswell, discovered Lake Monticello in the 1970's. Scotty and Dotty built one of Lake Monticello's first golf course homes, on Fairway Drive. Betsy and Fred have been Lake Monticello waterfront owners for over 25 years. She says it's amazing to have watched Lake Monticello grow from its early stages to the small town it is today.
In 2000, Betsy persuaded Fred and their youngest daughter, Maggie Gunnels, to move permanently from Northern Virginia to their beautiful waterfront home at Lake Monticello.
In 2001, Betsy renewed her real estate license and began a real estate career in earnest Fluvanna County. Since, she has SOLD over 300 homes, making her a Top Producing Lake Monticello and Fluvanna County Real Estate Agent. In 2008, she was voted by the community in The Rural Virginian's Readers Choice Awards, #1 Favorite Fluvanna County Realtor. She says real estate has been the most rewarding career of her life. She loves to meet new people and help her clients buy and sell their Lake Monticello and Fluvanna County homes.
Betsy Gunnels has THREE real estate designations.ABR, SRES and QSC
- The Accredited Buyer's Representative (ABR) designation is designed for real estate buyer agents who focus on working directly with buyer-clients. The ABR designation offers valuable real estate education that elevates your skills and knowledge in the eyes of the homebuyers, ongoing specialized information, programs and updates that help you stay on top of the issues and trends in successfully representing homebuyers and access to REBAC members-only marketing tools and resources, which provide an additional competitive edge.
- The Senior Real Estate Specialist (SRES) designation program was developed to help real estate professionals to profitably and ethically serve the real estate needs of clients age 50+.
- Betsy also is Quality Service Certified, QSC. This program is designed for real estate professionals to help improve the quality of service they provide for all their real estate clients.
Betsy is a member of the Fluvanna County Rotary Club. She sponsors The Pet of the Week for the Fluvanna SPCA in the Fluvanna Review. In memory of her father's love for golf, she participates in many golf fundraisers for Habitat for Humanity and Lake Monticello Fire and Rescue. She is also active in the Charlottesville MS Society Chapter. Betsy and Fred are active members of St. Peter and Paul Church in Fluvanna County.
During the spring, summer and fall you will most likely find Betsy enjoying the outdoors at Lake Monticello. She loves kayaking, swimming and boating on Lake Monticello. She also enjoys outdoor doubles tennis twice a week, walks with her dog "BZ", Virginia Tech football, UVA basketball and visits from family and friends.

Fred Gunnels' Bio
Fred Gunnels has been married to Betsy Gunnels for 38 years. He is the proud father of 5 beautiful daughters and grandfather to 7 grandchildren. He grew up in Arlington, VA and graduated from W-L High School and graduated from Virginia Tech with a degree in English and History.
Fred taught English and government in Sterling, Virginia middle school for two years. From the mid 1970's thru 1990's he was the owner of two extremely successful home service businesses in Northern Virginia with Betsy. Family always came first for Fred, but he also volunteered as a softball coach for his daughter's teams, umpired and taught religious classes at St. Joseph's Church in Herndon, Virginia.
After little persuasion, he moved from Northern Virginia with Betsy and his youngest daughter, Maggie, to Lake Monticello. The first year at the lake, he was his own contractor for the additions he added to their waterfront home. As Betsy's real estate business grew he joined her in the business and has become an integral asset to their clients.
Fred is also Mr. Handy Man. He can build a house from the ground up. He is especially useful for helping interpret home inspections for buyers and sellers. He is very helpful with suggestions on necessary home repairs before a home goes to the market.
Fred is an incredible asset to his clients. You will not be disappointed with his set of eyes. He always tells it like it is.
Fred enjoys reading, Virginia Tech football, UVA basketball games, cooking his famous chocolate chip cookies, fishing, tennis and more especially his girls and grandkids.
Fred is also Quality Service Certified.

Maggie Gunnels' Bio
Maggie Gunnels attended Paul VI High School and graduated from Fluvanna High School after the families move from Northern Virginia to Fluvanna County. She is a three year graduate from Radford University. Maggie has affinity for different cultures and experienced it when she studied abroad in Cuernavaca, Mexico and Madrid, Spain. Although she has a travelers spirit, Lake Monticello called her home after graduation and working in a State Farm Insurance.
Maggie is an integral part of The Gunnels Group. She has brought an exciting edge to the program. She has improved the marketing program, exposure online, photography, virtual tour and contact management.
Maggie Gunnels has the designation as a Quality Service Certified real estate agent. She is currently working on the e-PRO designation. The e-PRO Certification Course is a comprehensive and interactive educational course that is sponsored by the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION of REALTORS. The course is designed to help real estate clients with the technological real estate services.
One client simply described Maggie as "The best realtor after 19 years of buying and selling homes." "Simply the best!" You will not be disappointed with her attention to detail.
More than likely you will find Maggie with John at Pleasant Grove with their two golden retrievers. She LOVES animals! She and John are avid Virginia Tech fans, no matter the sport. She loves the Spanish language and culture.
Maggie Gunnels volunteers at a Charlottesville elementary school working with a young students to speak English as a second language (ESOL). She is passionate about working with people who have the desire, need and commitment to learn a second language. Each week she also volunteers her time composing ads and photography of the Fluvanna SPCA animals in the Fluvanna Review's Pet of the Week. She has also spent tiem as Big Sister with the program Big Brothers Big Sisters. Maggie Gunnels is committed to community building and involvement.
Maggie enjoys downtown Charlottesville, learning to ski, traveling, music, and the outdoors. She is a people person and mostly enjoys her family, friends and animals.
